I left BlogHer vowing to do more video. I know not everyone is crazy about watching videos, but one of the things I learned in New York is that my voice is one of my most distinctive features. The only way to incorporate that part of me into the blog is to do video.
Of course since making that vow I’ve let a lot of things get in the way and had not followed through. Also? It is really hard to come up with ideas of things to vlog about. Then last week I saw that Mama Kat is going to start providing weekly vlogging prompts, similar to what she does with Writer’s Workshop. I think this is the perfect opportunity to make good on my promise.
This week’s prompts were all about Halloween. I decided to answer the question, “If you had to dress up for Halloween this year, what would you wear?”
Directions for making a Mabel costume:
I wanted a sweater, but since I couldn’t find one that was both large enough and affordable I decided to go with a sweatshirt. I picked a font for the letters in Word, and then I printed the letters I needed and cut them out to make a template. I used sparkly felt for the letters, which I glued to the sweatshirt with fabric glue. I bought a strand of battery operated Christmas lights. I used a seam ripper to cut tiny holes in the sweatshirt, which I then pushed the lights through. I sewed the lights to the shirt to prevent them from falling out. I paired it with a knee length skirt (that you can’t see in the video) I made from a bright colored fabric and elastic. Tonight I’ll add a headband and be ready for trick or treating with the kids.
Do you dress up with your kids for Halloween? What is one of your favorite all time Halloween costumes? More importantly, have you seen the show mentioned in the video? Do you love it as much as I do? Or are you just cray cray? (You’ll only get that if you’ve actually seen the show.) (And now you will HAVE to watch it so you can get the joke.)

That is so awesome! Way to make your daughter happy!
I am thinking of being Jem… because I am truly outrageous.
You would make a super fantastic Jem!
That costume is awesome! I swore I was going to vlog more after I went to Bloggy Boot Camp, and it’s taken me over a year to get going!
It is an easy thing to vow to do, but not so easy a thing to follow through with.
So glad you decided to do videos! I love vlogging. I haven’t seen the show, but I think it was a great idea to dress up as something that you and your daughter relate to.
You should totally watch the show. It is so clever and funny. We love it.
You are too cute! I think you’re a natural vlogger, so stick with it!
Natural vlogger? I don’t know. Natural talker? For sure.
Witch hat for me tonight. But it’s a REALLY cool one.
And I have MISSED hearing your voice so thanks for the vlog! xo
Happy Halloween!
My witch hat was really cool too. I thought.
You are so dang awesome!
You are so dang awesome too!
Oh my gosh you are so cute, I could listen to your voice all day. I think it was my favorite part of BlogHer. No costume for me tonight, unless you count my snow suit.
I had been missing your vlogs.
We don’t have D-Channel. But I bet Cady is over-the-moon with your choice and hard work.
Aww look at you joining the fun! Glad you caved and decided to dress up.
Last year I dressed up as a sorceress but this year I ran out of time to come up with a good maternity costume! I’ve been telling myself to do more videos too so now it’s nice having a reason to actually do them at least once a week!
All hail MamaKat for setting up the Vlogging workshop because I’m like you, I get the benefit of vlogging but am at a loss on what to vlog *about*. Love the costume…you’re a good sport Mama!
Love when you vlog! I keep on saying I am going to vlog and then never do it!
And the costume is priceless!
DO IT! Kat has all of these prompts that make it easy to come up with ideas. All you need an iPhone or iPad with iMovie on it. So easy.
I have not heard of that show, so I don’t get the costume, but I still think a shirt with lights on it is FABULOUS!
Google it. It is so fantastic. Very, very clever. You may have to watch a couple of episodes to get into it. The one liners are magnificent, and you pick up new ones every time you watch. My favorite is in the pioneer days episode, Gruncle Stan says, “I gotta get away from these people. I’m getting stupider by the minute.” That’s my life’s philosophy right there.
