My newest love, Downton Abbey

by Jennifer on February 16, 2012

I know it the day where I normally post about Weight Watchers, but I don’t really have an update this week. I’ve been sick. I fell off the wagon a little bit. Blah, blah, blah.

Plus, I can’t get my newest obsession out of my head to really think about anything else. I was going to skip writing at all today, but then I thought why not tell you about my love for Downton Abbey.

Have y’all watched this show? It is simply amazing. Quite possibly the best show I’ve seen on television ever. It is cleverly written with great plot twists, and the acting is superb. My only complaint is that there seem to be only seven episodes per season. Here is a rundown of the characters.

Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham played by Maggie Smith – I love, love, love her. I want to be this character when I grow up. She is the perfect blend of meddlesome, witty, and caring. She doesn’t mind handing out the sharp barb or sticking her nose in where it doesn’t belong. David said, “she always leaves the room with a zinger.”

Robert, Earl of Grantham played by Hugh Bonneville – He is the steadfast leader of the family that feels honor bound to take care of his family legacy.

Cora, Countess of Grantham played by Elizabeth McGovern – She is an American that saved the family legacy with an influx of cash when she married Robert. Together they have three daughters, but no sons to inherit the estate and title. She is often in an uncomfortable partnership with her mother in law to do what they think is right for the girls in the family.

Lady Mary Crawley, the oldest daughter played by Michelle Dockery – Mary is having to come to grips that her life is not going as easily as she had planned. At times Mary is her own worst enemy with the situations she finds herself in and the decisions she makes. Disappointed that she will not be allowed to inherit the title and estate, she searches to find the proper husband.

Lady Edith Crawley, the middle sister played by Laura Carmichael – The quintessential middle child and “ugly duckling” of the family she is constantly at odds with her older sister. The biting lines the two trade back and forth are some of the best in the series.

Lady Sybil Crawley, the youngest sister played by Jessica Brown-Findlay – Sybil is the sister that loves a good cause. As the youngest she isn’t worried about finding an appropriate suitor or as involved in the family issues. Actually she is too busy trying to find her own… but in a good way. Sort of.

Matthew Crawley played by Dan Stevens – Matthew is the reluctant heir. After the current heir dies in the sinking of Titanic (don’t worry, this isn’t a spoiler), a frantic search is made to find the new heir. As a distant third cousin and son of a “middle class” doctor he has had no relationship with the family until he was needed.

Isobel Crawley played by Penelope Wilson – She is the widowed mother of Matthew. Having been raised in the professional middle class she comes to the family with an entirely different set of values that often has her butting heads with Violet and Cora. The scenes that pit her and Violet at opposites are some of the best. Both of these actresses are stunning.

That’s the family, but what makes the show so fantastic is that it also follows the stories of the servants as well. I can see this post is already getting too long so I’ll write another next week discussing the personalities of the staff.

Do y’all watch the show? What do you think about it? Who is your favorite character? If you aren’t currently watching but want to you can find season one streaming on Netflix and all of the current episodes from season two or available on PBS.

You must try to watch it. I think you would love it, and the girls could watch it too. Well, at least I think they could.

This is my favorite show on TV right now, as far as period pieces go. I am also obsessed and can talk about it any/all the time! I am a huge Jane Austen and Phillipa Gregory fan, too. I don’t get swoony over “modern” RomComs (the exception being You’ve Got Mail, hehe) but anything set pre WW2 I go all crazy. It’s probably the costumes!

Jennifer February 16, 2012 at 4:05 pm

The dresses are all beautiful, but can you imagine having to “dress” every night for dinner. What a pain.

Carrie February 16, 2012 at 1:37 pm

My best girlfriend insisted I watch it.

So, I did. One episode.

I loved it and didn’t even know what it was about. Now I have to go find the first season and start from scratch.

And I love Maggie. Love her.

You MUST start from the beginning. I would imagine starting in the middle would make you pretty lost about what all was going on and the relationships between everyone.

I love this show SO much! My hubby watches it with me, which is awesome because there just aren’t that many shows that we both like. He’s a big history buff, so he loves that angle, and I just adore the characters and the clothing :) And Maggie Smith is my favorite – I hear next season they’re bringing in Shirley MacLaine as Cora’s mother and she and Maggie will have some major clashes – I can’t wait!

David wanted to watch it with me, but I couldn’t wait for him. My obsession could not be denied. I’m trying to tell him to catch up with me.

Shirley McClaine is going to be awesome. I can’t wait to see those two butt heads.

I have only watched it on Netflix and can never seem to catch it on the TV. But I loved what I saw! To me it’s like watching a novel on TV, or something like that. (Should be noted the only novels I really read are romance novels.)

It kind of sort of is like watching a novel play out, but to me it isn’t really like a romance novel. I know there is some of that going on, but the relationships between everyone is just so… great. I love it.

Love it! I love British television, though. Maggie Smith is one of my favorite in this too- I also like Carson and William. I was sad to see William go. You did a fantastic job of summarizing the series!

I have watched six episodes of Season 1. I guess I’ll have to wait for Season 2 to be on Netflix. I’ve been watching while on the treadmill or bike at the gym, mostly. I like Anna, one of the dressing maids. I want to throw things at Thomas and O’Brien.

Let me preface this with I rarely watch Tv. I read this title this morning and I thought maybe you were going on a trip to England. Then in the grocery store I saw a headline on a magazine about Downtown Abbey and I realized it was a show! LOL

Jennifer February 16, 2012 at 9:37 pm

I WISH I was going on a trip to England.

I guess I’m going to have to start watching. Is it okay to get into it now? What have I missed? I’ll set my DVR…

Jennifer February 17, 2012 at 7:28 am

NO! You won’t have a clue what is going on. You need to go back to season 1 and watch from the beginning. You can watch everything online. The last episode of this season will be on Sunday.

Thanks for the overview! I’ve heard the name (and how it’s NOT “DowntoWn”) but didn’t know anything about it except that it was British. This’ll probably go on our to-watch queue on Netflix. When we’ll get to it, however, I don’t know.. hubby wants to subject me to the entire Star Trek: Deep Space 9 because I made him sit through Babylon 5 back when we first got together, LoL!

I have got to watch this. So many people I know and adore love this show. It must be a good one. Hmmm…maybe I can get some alone time on the couch this weekend and play catch up. Downtown Abbey marathon…here I come!

Tracie February 18, 2012 at 12:24 am

I just started watching it, and I’ve only seen a couple of episodes, but I am pretty much in love with it. Brilliant show!

I need to go to the pbs website and get caught up on all the episodes I missed.
