Fit B4 40: A daily challenge

by Jennifer on August 20, 2010

“Triumph is just try with a little bit of “umph” added.”

I don’t know who said that, but I really love it and right now it really symbolizes where I’m at in this whole “eating right” plan.

I finally got over the flu and my stomach feels like it has stabilized. I’ve been trying all week to get back on plan and focus on what needs to be done to keep my momentum moving. My heart really hasn’t been in it this week and I realize that. In some ways it has made me try harder and in others it has made me weak.

Oh I haven’t really done anything all that horrible. Last night I had pizza for dinner and earlier this week I had gotten the kids McDonald’s for dinner and I sneaked a couple of fries and one nugget. Other than that I’ve been pretty on target.

I always get to this point in a diet where my “umph” starts to lag and I start to slip. I wish I could make that part of myself go away, but I don’t know how to do that. So my goals for the upcoming week are to refocus, to plan better and to find my “umph”.

What are some of the things that help you maintain your focus when you are trying to lose weight or eat healthier?

The most important thing I have learned about weight loss is that if you have major weight to lose its a MARATHON not a SPRINT. As long as I kept gradually losing weight the little slip ups didn't bug me as much. I tried to look in the mirror every day and say FAT YOU WILL NOT WIN! YOU WILL NOT BEAT ME AGAIN LIKE YOU HAVE BEFORE…..(in that stuart smalley voice)

I wish I had an answer for you but that's my problem too.

Last Summer I got up almost every week day and walked. It was great!

But then the weather got cold.

I don't know, but I haven't been doing it as long as you have, and I slacked off yesterday. I really needed to run or ride my bike, and well, it rained, so I couldn't ride my bike. The thought of getting on the elliptical made me want to cry, so I did NOTHING. ugh. And had pizza for dinner. :-(

I was hoping you had some awesome motivational quote, No pressure. I've gained 3.5 lbs in the past week. Major oops.

That quote is perfect for me today. It was a hard day just to get going. I need some "ump"… I'm working on it with coffee but I think it's much more than a caffeine pick me up that I need.

Good luck getting healthier!

The most important thing is to remember it is a continuous process. Don't beat yourself up for a small slip and whatever you do, DON'T get in the mindset of " Well, I ate one chicken nugget and blew my plan, I might as well eat them all." Treat yourself every once in awhile so you don't feel deprived and remember everyone slips up, forgive yourself and move on.

I don't have this down pat, but it is being satisfied with the right things. Food, even Chik fil A;o), will not fill the space that was meant to be filled with (your beautiful gorgeous) life.

Now I have been so smart, I have to go keep on keeping on with a bedroom and a packing list. I wish I didn't have an answer for you (me).

This book changed my life.

It's not about dieting, it's about changing your mindset. His 4 rules:
1. Eat whenever you are hungry
2. Eat what you want.
3. Enjoy every bite (eat slowly)
4. Stop when you THINK you might be full.

He has CD you listen to every day (takes about 30 minutes and I do it at night before I go to bed).

The stories in there are amazing and it's a lifestyle that allows you those fries and nuggets if you REALLY want them as long as you enjoy them and stop when full.

Check it out.

That is my single biggest problem. I lose my umph and then I start to slip and the whole thing goes downhill. It is awful.

That is always the problem, huh. You are doing so well and then something happens and you can't get back on track.
I would say start with one thing to get you back on track – like preparing and eating only healthy meals (not focusing so much on the snacks) and then work in the snacks.
It is a process!

When I was/am carrying more weight on me than I like, I look in the mirror and look for the thinner/healthier me. I liken it to a statue that's gonna come out from the large stone. Then whenever I reach for the pizza or the oreo, I remember the thinner me and choose. It's always a choice. It's just a matter of how committed I want to be to losing the weight. AND realizing that one oreo isn't gonna do me in, but I know what happens with one oreo (it becomes 2 and 3 and then a glass of milk, etc) Oreoes the gateway drug to my bigger self.

Have you read Women, Food & God yet? It helps keep me on course too.
